Jake Paul To Fight Mike Tyson In Boxing Match Live On Netflix

YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul will fight former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, Netflix and Most Valuable Promotions announced on Thursday.

Paul, 27, and Tyson, 57, will battle July 20 at the Dallas Cowboys’ home, AT&T Stadium, in a bout that will air on Netflix.

“I’m stepping up to face Tyson .. to see if I have what it takes to beat one of boxing’s most notorious fighters and biggest icons,” Paul said in a statement.

Tyson, once the youngest heavyweight title holder at age 20 and considered one of the greatest knockout artists of all time, offered praise for his relatively green foe, who has fought professionally for just four years.

“He’s grown significantly as a boxer over the years, so it will be a lot of fun to see what the will and ambition of a ‘kid’ can do with the experience and aptitude of a GOAT,” Tyson said, referring to his standing in boxing history.

Paul (9-1, 6 KO’s) noted that the second fight of his transition from social media personality to the ring ― a knockout of former NBA player Nate Robinson ― was on the undercard of Tyson’s exhibition bout against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020.

Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs) has not fought in an official pro bout since 2005, ESPN reported. He lost his final two matches. At that time he was already long removed from his reign as undisputed heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990. He regained two title belts in 1996.

Paul has defeated several UFC veterans who converted to boxing and recently scored first-round knockouts of boxers Andre August and Ryan Bourland. His lone defeat was to Tommy Fury in Feburary 2023.

Organizers have yet to determine whether the Paul-Tyson fight will be official or an exhibition, the sports network added.

Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul Fight Set for July 20 on Netflix from Cowboys' Stadium

Jake Paul has faced criticism for facing lower-level opponents throughout his boxing career, so he's now facing one of the greatest boxers of all time.

It was announced Thursday that Paul will be taking on boxing legend Mike Tyson on July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The fight will be streamed live on Netflix.

Of course, a 27-year-old Paul facing a 57-year-old Tyson is also worthy of criticism. However, it's an unsurprising matchup in the era of influencer boxing ushered in by Paul, where the spectacle is more important than the actual fight.

Still, Paul believes a fight against Tyson gets him closer to his ultimate goal of winning a world title.

"My sights are set on becoming a world champion, and now I have a chance to prove myself against the greatest heavyweight champion of the world, the baddest man on the planet and the most dangerous boxer of all time," Paul said in a tweet announcing the fight. "Time to put Iron Mike to sleep."

Tyson's last fight was an eight-round exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr. in November 2020 that ended in a split draw. He has shown in training videos that he still has top-notch boxing skills, but it's clear that he is well past his prime.

Paul defeated Ryan Bourland by first-round TKO in Puerto Rico this past Saturday to improve to 9-1 in his boxing career. Bourland carried a 17-2 record into the fight and is the most experienced boxer Paul has faced, but he looked like most of Paul's previous opponents, who were overmatched.

Facing Tyson is sure to draw a ton of attention, but it remains to be seen if it will earn Paul the respect he is still seeking from the boxing community.

Netflix to livestream Jake Paul and Mike Tyson fight

Netflix continues to widen its live sports coverage, with the heavyweight boxing mega-event headlined by social media star Jake Paul and boxing veteran Mike Tyson, to exclusively air on the streaming giant.

In partnership with Paul and Nakisa Bidarian’s boxing company, Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), Netflix will livestream the highly-anticipated match on July 20.

Netflix made its move into live sports with the celebrity golfing event The Netflix Cup in November, featuring athletes from original sports doc-series Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Full Swing. It also recently live-streamed the Netflix Slam, a tennis exhibition headlined by tennis champions Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcara.

The streamer said additional information, including the co-main event and undercards of the boxing event, will be announced at a later date.

Paul said: “Within just two and a half years of founding MVP, we’re about to produce the biggest fight in history, a fight in the biggest NFL stadium in the US, broadcast live, on the biggest streaming platform in the world – a testament to all we’ve accomplished in such a short amount of time. I could not be more excited to make this amazing fight available to all Netflix subscribers alongside the hardest hitter of all time, Mike Tyson, on Saturday, July 20th.”

Bidarian said: “Partnering with Netflix for this deal presents an unparalleled opportunity to bring Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson to the world on an unprecedented scale and we look forward to delivering this incredible clash of two of sports biggest names. Six generations of boxing fans will have a stake in the outcome and will be able to watch an anti-hero, Jake Paul, put it all on the line against the baddest man on the planet, Mike Tyson.

“Mike Tyson is one of the biggest icons in boxing history and Jake Paul is one of the biggest disruptors in boxing history,” added Gabe Spitzer, Vice President, Nonfiction Sports, Netflix. “Saturday, July 20 will be pure drama in the ring in Texas. We are thrilled to partner with Most Valuable Promotions for this historic event and we can’t wait for these two to face off for fans all across the world on Netflix.”

Netflix Fight Night: Mike Tyson to Battle Jake Paul in “Boxing Mega-Event” Streaming Live in July

The streaming giant is partnering with Paul's Most Valuable Promotions on the bout, which will be held at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.

Netflix is getting into combat sports in a major way, picking up what it is calling a “boxing mega-event” that will see the controversial former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson face off against YouTuber-turned-fighter Jake Paul.

Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions is partnering with Netflix on the event, which will stream live on the platform July 20 from AT&T Stadium in Dallas.

The match will be included for all Netflix subscribers (many other boxing bouts still use a pay-per-view model), though tickets will be sold to fill the 80,000-seat arena. There will also be a co-main event and undercard bouts.

“Mike Tyson is one of the biggest icons in boxing history and Jake Paul is one of the biggest disruptors in boxing history,” Gabe Spitzer, vp nonfiction sports for Netflix, said in a statement. “Saturday, July 20 will be pure drama in the ring in Texas. We are thrilled to partner with Most Valuable Promotions for this historic event and we can’t wait for these two to face off for fans all across the world on Netflix.”

The boxing match is a significant expansion of Netflix’s live sports strategy. The streaming giant inked a 10-year deal with the WWE valued at more than $5 billion in January, but executives noted at the time that the WWE blurs the line between sports and entertainment.

Instead, Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul is a bit closer to The Netflix Slam, which saw tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal face off in Las Vegas this past weekend; or The Netflix Cup, which was the company’s first foray into live sports with PGA Tour stars pairing with Formula 1 drivers in a golf event.

Terms of the deal to stream the match were not disclosed, though a source familiar with the deal framed it as being significant. For past recent fights, Paul and Tyson have been guaranteed payouts in the single digit millions, while also securing a percentage of the pay-per-view revenue.

Boxing, of course, was once a TV staple, with fights airing late at night on broadcast TV, before migrating to HBO, Showtime, and pay-per-view.

HBO exited the boxing business in 2018, with Showtime shuttering its sports division (including its boxing matches) last year. In recent years, boxing has had something of a resurgence, thanks in part to digital creators like Paul, his brother Logan Paul and KSI, among others, entering the sport. The Paul brothers were popular YouTube creators before training for the ring.

Jake Paul actually boxed former NBA star Nate Robinson in a 2020 undercard match in which Tyson was in the main event.

“It’s crazy to think that in my second pro fight, I went viral for knocking out Nate Robinson on Mike Tyson’s undercard. Now, less than four years later, I’m stepping up to face Tyson myself to see if I have what it takes to beat one of boxing’s most notorious fighters and biggest icons,” Paul said in a statement. “Within just two and a half years of founding MVP, we’re about to produce the biggest fight in history, a fight in the biggest NFL stadium in the US, broadcast live, on the biggest streaming platform in the world — a testament to all we’ve accomplished in such a short amount of time.”

“I’m very much looking forward to stepping into the ring with Jake Paul at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas,” added Tyson in a statement. “He’s grown significantly as a boxer over the years, so it will be a lot of fun to see what the will and ambition of a ‘kid’ can do with the experience and aptitude of a GOAT.  It’s a full-circle moment that will be beyond thrilling to watch; as I started him on his boxing journey on the undercard of my fight with Roy Jones and now I plan to finish him.”

“Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson is a once in a lifetime dream matchup and I anticipate it will be the most-watched boxing event in modern boxing history,” added Nakisa Bidarian, founder of Most Valuable Promotions. “Partnering with Netflix for this deal presents an unparalleled opportunity to bring Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson to the world on an unprecedented scale and we look forward to delivering this incredible clash of two of sports biggest names.”

Legal representation for Most Valuable Promotions and Jake Paul was provided by Michael B. Abramson of Solomon Ward. Mike Tyson was represented by Andrew Ruf at Paradigm.

Netflix has also become a major player in the sports documentary space, with docs focusing on teams and stars in the NFL, MLB, NBA, Formula 1, NASCAR, the PGA Tour, pro tennis and others all available or coming soon to the service.
